Mo' Money, Shifting Shifts, And Monday Night At The Movies

So I’m $10,000 richer, which is very cool, even though I’m still uncertain what I’m going to do with the money, and now that I have it I’m more keenly aware than ever just how easy it would be to totally blow through it all.
One thing that having the money does mean, though, is that I’ll definitely be heading down to Tucson at some point to visit my parents.
I had planned to do so sometime this month, but that was before I got started on the whole condo thing. Now I’ll probably plan it for sometime toward the end of next month.
At that time I’ll also (possibly) be getting a different work schedule.
Due to a reorganization that has combined the group I work in with two other groups to form a super group (I’d rather form a super group than a boy band), management began working on the establishment of uniform schedules across all three groups. They’ve decided to go with the basic five shift model that my original, non-super group used, but they’re moving everything back a day.
So that means that my three day, twelve and a half hour shift is being moved from Friday through Sunday to Thursday through Saturday.
People in my group, though, have the option of sticking with the schedule they already have provided that it will allow adequate staffing.
I actually opted to make the change to Thursday through Saturday. It doesn’t really matter to me which days I have off as long as I have four of them, so I could have just as easily stayed on my existing shift.
However, that would have meant that I’d have to deal with having two managers, as my current schedule would overlap with two managers on the new schedule.
Also, Brian decided he wanted to have a weekend day off so that he and Kathleen will actually be able to have a day off together, so I opted to follow him.
After all, we’ve been working together for over three years and we get along. As people shift around, there’s a good chance that people from some of the other shifts will come onto the shift with us, and while laziness is a factor, it’s not the main reason that I never volunteer to go in and work overtime when the other shifts need some extra coverage.
So if I have to put up with new people, it would be much better for me to have Brian on hand.
Of course, a lot of people currently working the M-Th shifts might want to avoid having to work on Sundays and might choose to sacrifice their Saturday and take the Th-Sa shift. Many of them have much more seniority that I do, so I might get bumped to my second choice shift, which wouldn’t be too bad, as my second choice is to stay on my current shift (with my third choice being that I get my first choice).
That would mean one day sans Brian, but I guess I could manage if need be.
Hopefully most of the people will be content to stay where they are and just move back a day.
I guess we’ll see.
As I’m writing this, someone on the fourth floor is moving out and has obviously contracted the services of the “We Bang All Your Stuff Against Every Single Step on the Way Down Moving Company.”
I’m thinking about going out and telling them that they may have missed one.
The odd thing about all of the people who have moved out recently, and there have been a lot of them, is that their absence has not managed to free up any spaces in the parking lot.
I’m damn near the only person living in my building now and it’s still next to impossible to get a space in front of it.
Oh well.
I watched Million Dollar Baby last night, and I have to say that I was impressed.
I would say that the obvious key to making Hilary Swank shine is to have her play white trash, as she was just as good in this role as she was in her previous Oscar-winning performance playing another white trash character.
She’s definitely come a long way since her role in The Next Karate Kid, and has overcome the adversity of being married to Rob Lowe’s less successful (though also, to his credit, less often videotaped having sex with minors) brother Chad (though apparently they’re getting a divorce), and having a last name that’s the same as an old men’s magazine. Good old “Swank” magazine; just slightly classier than “Hustler” and “Screw.”
Of course, Angelina Jolie managed to similarly overcome appearing in movies such as Hackers and Cyborg 2 and being married to a guy named Billy Bob.
(Though in fairness, I actually like Billy Bob Thorton, whereas Chad Lowe had to come along and steal Becca away from Tyler with all of his artsy sensitivity and the pathos of being HIV positive on Life Goes On. Jerk. All Billy Bob did was steal Angelina away from her brother.)
Of course, my movie watching went from the sublime to the ridiculous, as I followed up Million Dollar Baby with Seed of Chucky.

You know, there could be something to your theory, based on the preview I saw for the movie "Cars" today. Those cars were talking!
Damn cars, trying to take over the world. Look what you started, Knight Rider! Damn you, Michael Knight and KITT! Damn you to hell!

hi,
I saw where you won the iwm money, googled your name and found this site. Before I go further let me say I am not a freak begging for money or a stalker, etc. I only googled your name after I saw the reference to Neil Gaiman. Just wanted to say contrats on the iwon win. I check the list every so often as I have this dream that I will win. Sorta need the money, but that's a different story. Good luck with it, it was nice to see your blog, maybe I will read a little more of it when I slow down some. If I win om iwon, I will let u know.
