So I took today (as of this writing) and tomorrow off from work because…well, because.
It had been my intention to get the majority of my idleness and loafing out of the way over the weekend and use today and tomorrow to accomplish some things.
Unfortunately, there was some spillover.
I really don’t understand how time works, apparently, or rather, I don’t understand how it’s possible for me to waste so much time not actually doing anything, or why I can’t get the motivation to do anything other than sit idly wasting time.
I mean, you’d think that just by random chance that I’d actually end up doing something – even if by accident – in all the time that I spend just sitting around. You’d think that.
But the nothing just eats away at everything, like a wall of antimatter consuming everything in its path, and the next thing you know, I have no more of my time left to either waste or put to use.
Of course, it’s not just the nothing that devours time with a voracious appetite; the something – provided it’s something I don’t particularly want to do – seems to swallow huge chunks of it without even pausing to chew.
Something and Nothing: an efficient, time-devouring team.
Too be fair, I didn’t spend the whole weekend doing nothing, and there’s where something picked up the slack.
On Saturday evening I started working on an order for a Heroic Portrait, or rather, finishing a standing order that I’ve been working on for quite some time (there was no particular deadline or rush associated with it until recently).
Which is fine, as it was a good use of my time. Where it became a problem was that it was taking way more time than it should have, which was exacerbated by the periodic breaks I took to feed some time to nothing. So whereas I had hoped to finish it Saturday night – Sunday morning at the latest – I ended up not actually finishing it until this afternoon.
This meant that I ended up not getting any work done on any of the other pictures I wanted to work on over the weekend, and never got started on any of the other things I had hoped to accomplish prior to today.
Today was actually meant to be devoted to doing a bunch of work in the yard.
Unfortunately, by the time I got up, got showered and dressed, ventured out into the world to pick up the things I needed, and returned home, it was well after noon. I had an appointment at 3.
That meant that I had very little time in which to do some amount of work in the yard, shower again to wash away the sweat and mulch, and head off for my appointment, so I ended up accomplishing maybe one-fifth of the total amount of work I’d intended.
Fittingly, in the course of writing this, something came along and ate my time, and now I don’t remember what else I was going to say.
Oh well – it probably would have been a waste of time anyway.

Now With Pictures
After talking to my mother this morning I went out and did some stuff, came home, sat down, finally got around to watching Friday night’s Batman: The Brave and the Bold – Hey Cartoon Network, do you have something against girls? Let’s see Batman teaming up with some heroines (the brief cameos by Fire don’t really count). How about some Power Girl, or Hawkgirl, or Manhunter, or The Rose and the Thorn, or Black Canary? So far, besides Fire, we’ve only had Katana playing much of a part in the action. – and then, musing on how rapidly time flies, I said, “Well, I should get up and do something; it’s already 10 PM.”
Obviously it wasn’t – it wasn’t quite 2 PM – but my point was that it might as well have been given how quickly my available free time disappears. Shouldn’t I be having fun with the way that time is flying?
Eventually I decided that I should put together the bookcase, so I got to work on that.
I’m not sure that it’s in its permanent position yet, as I’m planning to do some additional reorganizing in the office – including the eventual addition of a drafting/drawing table – and I haven’t actually put much on the shelves yet, but at least it’s put together.
I’m too lazy to write up the post I’d intended to write detailing my some of my experiences with people in the comic book industry that was inspired by that story I posted the link to about the guy who went to the DC Comics offices as a kid. My stories aren’t anywhere near as cool or interesting, and most of the people who know me have probably heard them already anyway, but somewhere along the line I’ll write it up.
Probably.
In any case, here are the pictures of my new office furniture:

The recently-assembled bookcase.

The new office furniture, with a focus on the new chair.

The desk, chair, and printer cart.

Bonus Picture: I remain amazed that those little disks actually work as advertised. Or, more to the point, that they actually work for me.

Time Doesn't Care How Much Fun You're Having
I don’t think I could have been more pissed off about the fact that a. it was morning and b. it was Monday when my alarm went off today.
Last night and sleeping well…not so much.
At least there wasn’t a lot going on at work.
The big “excitement” was the phone training.
We’re switching to a new phone system in the next couple of weeks. The new phones have actually been hooked up next to our old phones for months, but they can only be used to make calls inside the building, so I haven’t bothered with using mine.
In any case, there was someone giving training sessions on the new phones all day today (and all day tomorrow), every hour on the hour. I went to one at 11, as I figured it was a good way to burn 45 minutes of the hour left until lunch time.
There will be training sessions all day tomorrow, too.
I just can’t get over how rapidly time flies once I get home from work.
I got home around 4:30 and sat down to watch last night’s Venture Bros.
For weeks my DVR wasn’t recording it, and I assumed that the show was on hiatus, but then I saw a new episode online and found out that I’d missed three episodes. I set it up to record again the other day, and this time around it did it.
After watching the show, I was amazed to discover that suddenly it was 8:00. How the hell did that happen?
I was going to watch The Closer at 9, whittling away yet another available hour of my remaining period of wakefulness, but decided to let it record and to watch it either at 10, or tomorrow, but I went downstairs a few minutes ago and found that, to my horror, it wasn’t recording.
I set it to catch the midnight repeat, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed that it will actually record and will be waiting to eat into my time tomorrow night.
It’s not like I’m having fun, so why is time insisting on flying every worknight?
It wouldn’t be so bad if I could get by on minimal amounts of sleep, but I just don’t seem to be able to function on anything less than 7 hours. Stupid aging process.
Of course, it’s not like I was all that resilient when I was younger, but at least it never seemed like my available time was flying out the window.
(By the way, the fact that I’m likely to squander any time I do have is beside the point.)
Anyway, not much is going on, as it’s proving to be a rather typical Monday.
