In a display of ambivalence that is truly worthy of Threshold, those loyal readers who actually subscribe to this blog (all three of them) have sounded off with their opinions on the subjects of receiving complete copies of new entries via e-mail.
The consensus? There is no consensus.
One person likes it, one person doesn’t, and the other doesn’t care either way.
Still, because the do like and don’t care votes outnumber the don’t like, I guess I will keep it set up the way it is, barring a sudden influx of new subscribers who decide that they don’t like receiving the complete entries via e-mail.
Quite some time ago at work in random Web surfing Brian found some stories about people who had purchased abandoned missile silos and converted them into homes. An example can be seen here, and additional information can be found here.
In an equally random fashion on Sunday, Brian said to me, “You should be one of those people who makes a missile silo into a house. You can just pop your head up every once in a while, look around, and say, ‘Yep…people still suck,’ then go back down.”
I’d be lying if I said that the idea doesn’t have a certain appeal, but honestly, despite my reclusive tendencies I’ve never really been the type to want to totally withdraw from society like some sort of mountain man or Unabomber or whatever. I mean, sure, the advent of Internet commerce would make that sort of thing more convenient (though I’d probably end up having to use – ugh – dial-up in the silo), but there’s something to be said for living within easy driving distance of a Best Buy or Circuit City.
So as much as I’m disdainful of society and try to avoid interacting with it whenever possible, there are certain aspects of it (mostly electronic gadgets) that are indispensable to even my reclusive life.
Besides, while living in a former missile silo in the middle of nowhere would have a certain cachet, the fact of the matter is that after having grown up in BFE I’m pretty much done with the whole living in the middle of nowhere thing.
Still, it seems as though buying a missile silo would be considerably more affordable than trying to buy a simple condo here in NoVA…
