Most people, including yours truly, would agree that Google is one of the best things to happen to the Web, and Google’s Image Search only adds to its usefulness.
Well, for the most part, anyway.
Increasingly I’m finding myself incredibly irritated by the results that Image Search produces. Why? Well, have you ever noticed that, regardless of what you search for, the best results (meaning images that are larger than 80x80 pixels and that show the subject of the image to the greatest advantage) never work? Click on the thumbnail link and you get hit with a 404, or you end up at a Web site that has a red “X” where the picture ought to be located.
In short, the Image Search is frequently pretty much useless.
I read in an interview with Google’s founders that their motto for how Google should operate is “Don’t be evil.” I think they need to do some work on the non-evil aspects of Image Search.
The search results that contain those great images in thumbnail form that lead only to disappointment strike me as being rather evil.
I’m obviously no expert in what’s involved in Google’s searching process, but I can’t imagine that it would be terribly difficult for the search process to filter out images that either don’t exist or are inaccessible in some fashion (some results lead to sites that require a membership).
Anyway, that’s just my random complaint for today.
