I've been sober for nearly nine years, which means it's been nearly nine years since I last got behind the wheel while drunk. If I believed in karma, I would think that fact had earned me some karmic protection from this sort of thing.
I guess it's a good thing I don't really believe in karma (carma?).

Well you were not in the car at the time so there is some Karma protection. That could have easily beat the crap out of you.
I just hope insurance comes through for you. Keep us posted!
